In those years, the Chinese women's volleyball team chased together
The last ball was served by the Brazilian team and the Chinese team made a pass.
It restored the quarter-finals between China and Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Although the results of the competition are not suspenseful, it does not prevent the audience from being infected by the blood and tension of the film.
In addition to the "China-Pakistan War", the 1981 China-Japan Games and the 2008 China-US Games, each game put the audience into the real mood of watching the game.
So, how did director Chen Kexin shoot the game where everyone knows the result so exciting that it makes the audience feel nervous and tears in their eyes again?
From the start of the plot in 1979, the first world championship in 1981, to the top of the world in 2016, the story of "Winning the Championship" spans 37 years.
When preparing for "Win the Championship", the biggest problem was the choice of the Chinese women's volleyball story.
In Chen Kexin's view, the Chinese women's volleyball team has 40 years,
Chen Kexin and the screenwriter
"Bringing out the story of the Chinese women's volleyball team from two different perspectives is the direction we determined very early. We have tried our best not to make a'Lang Ping Biography'. If it is really a'Lang Ping Biography', Lang Ping has a lot more Stories can be included, including her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, etc. We did not write them."
Chen Kexin believes that Gong Li is the best candidate to play Lang Ping. He kept saying to Gong Li that as long as she stood there, she would have a very strong momentum, and her stubborn eyes were "Lang Ping." Moreover, Gong Li has the same status in the film circle as Lang Ping in the sports circle. "I think apart from Gong Li, I really can't think of anyone else to play this role."
The actor who played the female volleyball team in "Win the Championship" in the 1980s tried to find a taller actress or model and trained for two weeks
Later, the crew spent about a year and a half, with the support of the General Administration of Sports and other departments, met with thousands of volleyball players, and selected about forty or fifty people from them.
"No matter the group of actors from the women's volleyball team in the 1980s, or the group of actors from the active national team, I was overjoyed. They are not acting, but expressing their true feelings."
The Chinese women's volleyball player who "played herself" was shocked for the first time. The Olympic champions Zhu Ting, Hui Ruoqi, Xu Yunli, Zhang Changning, Ding Xia and other Olympic champions reappeared in the heart-wrenching Rio China-Pakistan battle, which netizens cordially called "limited-time actors and best players."
Chen Kexin said that many players surprised him. In his career, he has never tried to work with so many "unexpected" actors in a play. "They have such a team understanding, they are not artificial at all, and they are not like ‘acting’ at all."
"Win the Championship" presents four games. In addition to the three historic matches between China and Japan, China and the United States, and China and Brazil, there is also the Chinese women's volleyball match against the Jiangsu Men's Volleyball Team.
"In the scene of the China-US game, the focus was not on the ball game, but on the'competition' between the two coaches." Chen Kexin told reporters. In the interview, he used more space to analyze how the other three games were shot. From his description, the difficulty of shooting these three games has been escalated.
"We really crossed the river by feeling the stones," said Chen Kexin. The Chinese women's volleyball match against the Jiangsu men's volleyball team was filmed for 6 days. At that time, the film was shot using the traditional filming method, that is, the shots were divided. Then, shoot how each ball is played and where the ball lands.
The second game was the China-Japan competition in 1981. In contrast, the audience’s familiarity was much higher. This time, regardless of the shots, the crew transferred 6 cameras from the film and photography crew and set up 6 cameras, trying to make every The lens is completely consistent with the video of that year.
Chen Kexin said that the reduction degree of this scene is more than 90%. However, the shooting efficiency is not high, and the shots for catching the ball are not accurate enough. "When they are really playing, the camera of the movie will follow, not as fast as the ball."
So during the "China-Brazil War", the crew invited some women's volleyball players and Brazilian players who played that game. The shooting method is the same as that of the China-Japan game. The serve and scored balls are guaranteed to be exactly the same as the historical records. The advantage of this method is that the invited players have played that game and know how to play. A ball is not easy, so the crew added 6 machines-the cameraman in charge of the machine is a professional volleyball photographer on the Sports Channel. Add up to 12 machines to shoot.
Nanfang Daily: How do you view the significance of the Chinese women's volleyball team to the Chinese people?
Chen Kexin: China's reform and opening up embraces the world and is also embraced by the world. The Chinese women's volleyball team has also gone abroad and internationally. When China is waiting to be rejuvenated, I hope the world will see itself. What will it pass? In fact, the women's volleyball team is a perspective and window for the world to see China. It is indeed not as simple as a sport, but a Chinese spirit.
When preparing for "Win the Championship", I hope to find something that is more relevant to the Chinese audience, which will also enable Chinese audiences to be emotional when watching movies, and at the same time find some characters that are more grounded. In the process, I saw various TV broadcasts of Chinese volleyball, the interaction between the audience and the volleyball, the Chinese people’s "crazy" towards Chinese volleyball, especially the women’s volleyball, and the excitement after winning. I feel that the significance of the Chinese women's volleyball team goes far beyond sports itself.
The core of the whole play is the spirit of the women's volleyball team. Why did they win? How to win again? It contains values from different eras, and the audience can relive the changes over the past few decades with their families.
Nanfang Daily: Are you satisfied with the box office results of "Winning Championship"? Is the market space for sports movies still relatively limited?
Chen Kexin: Film is a relatively passive art, and it needs to be verified by the audience and the market. We tried our best to shoot "Win the Championship", and I was quite satisfied with the creation and production, including the creation and production process. I think we have been lucky to make such a movie and we have made a lot of right decisions. I have not left any regrets, but how the market will give back is a market-led thing and we have to accept it.
For us, as long as it is done without regrets, it is the best. Movies always need more and different types to come in. You can't just shoot one type or several types forever.
Nanfang Daily: Many viewers feel that the film has many tears. What do you think of everyone's feedback?
Chen Kexin: Every time someone tells me, "I cried when I watched your movie", I don't know if it is a compliment or a derogation. Emotion is indeed a natural expression in my movies. This is my instinct. I also like watching movies, and sometimes I am easily moved by emotions. So many times when I make movies, I will naturally go in that direction and shoot a lot of emotional things. Maybe some viewers think it is too sensational.
